Tate McRae did not believe Taylor Swift was listening to her music until she saw it for herself.

The Canadian singer told The Tonight Show on Oct. 7 that headlines about Swift praising her single "Tit for Tat" sent her searching social media for proof. She had never spoken to Swift and did not know Swift knew her work.

Swift had named "Tit for Tat" during an October 2025 appearance on the same show, while promoting her album The Life of a Showgirl. Asked about the last song she had listened to, Swift said McRae "has a great new song called 'Tit For Tat,' you gotta listen to it" on full volume on repeat, according to Billboard. Swift's answer was also reported by People at the time.

McRae said the shout-out reached her through other people first. She told host Jimmy Fallon she was getting texts about Swift's comments. She could not find the clip straight away. She described herself as "trying to find proof" because she could not locate it.

"Tit for Tat" was produced by Ryan Tedder. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, the United States singles chart, which was McRae's best debut and tied for her highest peak as a lead artist, according to Billboard. McRae later performed the song for a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York. Rolling Stone described the track as a breakup anthem.

McRae used the Oct. 7 interview to look ahead to her next release. Her single "Housewife" is slated to arrive on Oct. 15. She described it as a song about a woman who cannot be contained. She said the video was shot in the South of France.

Attentive concertgoers may have seen the title already. McRae said "Housewife" was displayed on screen when her headlining set at the Lollapalooza festival started over the summer.

She also talked about the hidden clues, often called Easter eggs, that she plants for listeners. She said her fans miss the ones she drops. They "always catch onto things that are completely wrong."

McRae also discussed her new perfume during the interview, according to a TV listing report of the broadcast.
