A tactics game left for dead is getting a second life.

Gods With Badges was revealed at the Triple-i Initiative showcase as a narrative-driven tactics game, a strategy-led game about positioning, careful planning and story choices, about a disgraced police officer returning to duty. The reveal came with a backstory. Strange Scaffold saved the project from cancellation after its original developer cancelled it, GameSpot. It is a second chance built on another studio's unfinished work.

The game began at Artificer under the working title Hard Justice, the name used in development before the final title was fixed. Artificer is a Devolver Digital-owned studio known for Minos, Sumerian Six and Showgunners. Its new home is Strange Scaffold, the studio behind El Paso, Elsewhere.

Players control Harrow McClellan. He is a disgraced officer back on patrol in Scarhelm, a dystopian city, a harsh and tightly controlled fictional place. His return to duty drives both the conversations and the combat.

Most encounters start with choice-driven dialogue, where what players say shapes how characters react. Those talks can break down into isometric, turn-based combat, shown from an angled overhead view with each side acting in turn. It is a structure built for tension. Talk first, fight if talks fail.

The twist is Harrow's bodycam. Players can switch it off to unlock more combat abilities. That decision changes the narrative, and the behaviour of those around him. In short, power comes with consequences.

Strange Scaffold studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr. said he was grateful to the original developers at Artificer for trusting Strange Scaffold with the project. The handover fits the studio's wider approach. Strange Scaffold leads Project Share, an initiative that encourages developers to share original game code for other studios to reuse.

Gods With Badges is scheduled for release on PC in 2027. The announcement so far names a year and a platform only. No exact day within 2027 and no price have been given. It was announced during the Triple-i Initiative, a showcase made by studios, for players, which runs with no hosts and no ads, Triple-i Initiative. The event was scheduled to return on 8 October, following an April 2026 edition that featured 40 announcements.

What makes this stand out is how the policing theme feeds the systems. The bodycam is a combat switch and a story switch at once. Turn it off and you fight harder. The city remembers.
