Craig Zobel will direct a feature film of Something Is Killing the Children for Blumhouse.

The plan was announced at New York Comic-Con, where Blumhouse laid out its 2027 slate, as reported by Deadline. Zobel will take on the horror comic series created by writer James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell'Edera.

The comic was first published by BOOM! Studios in 2019. BOOM! Studios now operates as an imprint, a publishing label owned by a larger group, of Penguin Random House. The series has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.

That readership is built around a simple set-up. The story centres on Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who arrives in the small town of Archer's Peak after children begin to disappear. She finds something hunting them in the dark.

Jason Blum and Blumhouse are among the producers of the film. Stephen Christy and Tynion will produce for BOOM! Studios/Penguin Random House alongside Blum for Blumhouse. A producer in film guides a project from rights to release, hiring key talent and managing the budget.

The wider producing team is also set. Shaun Sutton, Ryan Turek, Adam Yoelin and Mette Norkjaer will executive produce, a senior overseeing credit, with Dell'Edera as co-producer. That keeps both the publisher and the comic's co-creator inside the production.

Blumhouse is working on two versions at once. Alongside the live-action film, the company is developing an adult animated series based on the same comic. That series will be shepherded by Tynion, the comic's writer.

For fans, this means the comic is not being forced into one shape. One team is building a cinema telling with Zobel directing, while Tynion leads a separate animated telling for older viewers.
