Northampton Saints have tied down loosehead prop Manny Iyogun to a new contract.

The announcement came on 13 October. Iyogun is 25, full name Emmanuel Iyogun, and made his England Test debut in July. Saints billed him as the club's newest England international when they confirmed the extension Northampton Saints.

He follows Tommy Freeman, Henry Pollock and Tom Pearson in recommitting to Franklin's Gardens, the club's home in Northampton BBC Sport. Phil Dowson is the club's director of rugby, the head of the playing department.

A loosehead prop is the front-row forward who packs down on the left of the scrum. The scrum is the set-piece where the two packs push against each other for the ball. Props are central to it. They also tackle, carry and lift in the lineout, the throw-in that restarts play after the ball goes out.

Iyogun is a product of the Saints academy, the club's youth development system. He has made 104 appearances across eight seasons for Northampton. Pass 100 games for one club and you earn the title of centurion.

His route into rugby was late. Born in Madrid and raised in Basildon, he pursued football first. He discovered rugby at 14. He then joined Southend RFC, where he caught the attention of Saints academy scouts.

He entered Northampton's pathway system in 2016. A year later he made his under-18s debut as a back-row forward. He played two years above his own age group.

He had joined college as a No 8. That is the back-row forward who binds at the back of the scrum and controls the ball at its base. He later transitioned to the front row. He signed a previous long-term contract as a 21-year-old prop.

He said he is 'excited for the next chapter' after signing again. A Test cap means a full senior international appearance. It sits at the top of the sport.

For fans, this means stability. Saints keep a homegrown, England-capped loosehead who is now into triple figures for the club, alongside three other recent re-signings.

What makes this stand out is the distance travelled. From football to Southend to the under-18s to more than 100 senior games, then England honours in July, Iyogun has built his career in one place. He stays there.
