Lola Young reveals Chappell Roan's trick for private chats

Lola Young says Chappell Roan covered both of their mouths so no one else could read their lips.
The two singers were sitting side by side at Vivienne Westwood's fashion show during Paris Fashion Week this spring when they started talking. Young told British Vogue that Roan blocked their lips from view to keep the private conversation private.
The account comes from Young's British Vogue cover-story interview, published Thursday, Oct. 15. Billboard, which reported on the interview, attributed Young's comments about Roan, recovery and her love life to Vogue, not to its own reporting. Billboard
Young and Roan are labelmates, both signed to Island Records. They were also recent rivals at the 2026 Grammys in February, where Young won best pop solo performance ahead of Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Roan and Justin Bieber.
The Vogue interview also addressed Young's health. She collapsed onstage at All Things Go in 2025 and then stepped away from music to recover. Discussing self-sabotage, work and personal issues, she said: "Recovery isn't linear. It's a nonstop journey."
That recovery has taken place in public. Young, who broke through with 'Messy', which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart, has spoken this year about addiction, sobriety and mental health while returning to live work.
She has recently announced a 2027 North American Tour. No dates or venues were detailed in the Billboard report on the Vogue interview.
Young also spoke briefly about dating. She said she is "seeing various people" and refuses to use dating apps.
What makes this stand out is its ordinariness. Two famous young singers, in a front row full of cameras, used a practical fix to have a normal chat. Young praised Roan for thinking of it first.
