Steven Soderbergh to Finish The Batman Part II Shoot as Matt Reeves Steps Away

Steven Soderbergh will direct the final weeks of The Batman Part II while Matt Reeves steps away to attend to an ongoing family matter, Deadline reported on 15 October 2026.
The assignment covers principal photography, the main shoot with actors on camera. Reeves will take charge again for post-production, the edit, visual effects, sound and music, when he is ready to return.
The cameras stopped in London. Filming had been under way there before production was paused so Reeves could focus on the family matter. Reeves is unable to be on set during that time.
Soderbergh offered to help as an admirer of Reeves' work. The two directors will work together and remain in communication until filming has ended, with the aim of keeping Reeves' plan intact through the final weeks.
DC Studios said Soderbergh will step in with its full support to help Reeves complete the shoot. Soderbergh said his goal is to work with Reeves and his team to generate footage that integrates seamlessly with what has already been shot.
The film is now scheduled for release on 18 February 2028. It was originally set for 2 October 2026, then moved to 1 October 2027, before Warner Bros. pushed it to February 2028 in July, according to Variety. That July move was made to give Reeves additional time in post-production, Variety reported at the time.
Robert Pattinson is returning as Batman, with Andy Serkis back as Alfred and Colin Farrell back as Penguin. The sequel follows Reeves' 2022 film The Batman, which reintroduced Pattinson in the role.
The new cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry. Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch are also joining the ensemble.
For fans, this means the London footage stays as the foundation. New material will be shaped to match it, with Reeves involved throughout, and he returns to finalise the film in the edit.
