Steven Soderbergh will help finish The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves steps back to deal with an ongoing family matter, Variety reported on 15 October 2026. The arrangement covers the final weeks of the shoot. Reeves stays with the film.

Soderbergh will oversee the last stretch of principal photography, the main shoot with actors on set, with the full support of DC Studios, according to Variety. He and Reeves plan to work closely with the cast and crew to fulfil Reeves' vision for the sequel. The handover is temporary.

The idea came from Soderbergh. He approached Reeves and offered to step in, The Hollywood Reporter reported on 15 October 2026. He will work with Reeves from a distance through the closing weeks of production. That structure keeps Reeves involved while another veteran director manages the set day to day.

Production had been put on hold in early October while Reeves focused on the family matter. The pause was reported on 5 October by E! News and on 6 October by Yahoo Entertainment. The new arrangement gives the production a clear path to restart and complete the shoot.

Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is scheduled for release on 18 February 2028. The date puts the sequel in the first quarter of the year, well after cameras stop.

Reeves has steered this version of Gotham for almost a decade. He was hired to direct The Batman in 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported. He later became a driving force on the HBO spin-off The Penguin and a producer of Clayface. Both projects grew out of the world around his Batman films.

Soderbergh is a prolific director who moves between studio films and independent projects. He directed the tech thriller Kimi, starring Zoe Kravitz, which was made for HBO Max, The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2022. Regé-Jean Page later joined his film Black Bag, The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2024.

For fans, this means the shoot can finish without losing its director. The cast remains in place. The story remains Reeves' story, with Soderbergh keeping the production moving through its final weeks.
