Kevin McKidd has launched Ferryman Films, an Edinburgh-based indie — meaning an independent company that develops and makes shows — after leaving Grey's Anatomy after almost two decades.

McKidd played surgeon Dr Owen Hunt on the long-running ABC medical drama. He left the role in 2026 and directed his final episode as Hunt, as he detailed in an earlier interview with Deadline.

At the time of his latest interview, published on 16 October, he was filming Conviction. That is the Hulu legal drama starring Elisabeth Moss from House creator David Shore, according to Deadline. McKidd plays the husband of Moss's character, Neve Harper.

Ferryman Films has partnered with STV Studios. STV Studios is the production and distribution arm of Scottish broadcaster STV, run by former NBCUniversal executive David Mortimer. The deal covers joint development and production of drama.

The first collaboration is an adaptation of The Red Shore, the detective novel by William Shaw. Ferryman Films is also developing Friends Like These for the BBC, a female-led story about a group of friends in their 30s written by Gillian McCormack. A third project, Troubadour, is in development with Rome creator Bruno Heller and co-writer Kieran Hurley.

McKidd's next screen role is The Only Suspect for ITV in the UK. The four-part thriller is adapted by Simon Ashdown from the novel by Louise Candlish and directed by Farren Blackburn. McKidd plays Alex, with Amaka Okafor as his wife Beth.

The story moves between the present day and mid-1990s London. The 1990s scenes are set in Camden. That setting is familiar ground for McKidd. He played Tommy in Danny Boyle's film Trainspotting and recently attended a 30th anniversary screening of the film in Edinburgh.

For fans, this means a clean break. One long hospital run is finished. A slate of British dramas and a new production base in Scotland is next.
