Calipari hid behind his phone rather than approach Taylor Swift at Knicks game

John Calipari has coached in packed arenas for decades, but Taylor Swift left him hiding behind his phone.
The University of Arkansas basketball coach and Basketball Hall of Famer said he was too embarrassed to walk up to Swift when he spotted her at Madison Square Garden. He described the moment in an Oct. 15 interview with CBS Sports College Basketball, as reported by Billboard.
Calipari had been at Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the league’s championship series. Swift was only a few feet away, talking with actor Adam Sandler and his wife. Calipari said he knew Sandler, but still felt intimidated.
So he pretended to be busy on his phone. He said he stood in the back corner and watched instead of saying hello.
What makes this stand out is who is admitting the nerves. Calipari said the last time he felt that starstruck was when he met former United States president Barack Obama. In the end, he said Swift came up to him herself and was bubbly.
The game around the encounter was a big one. Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals paired the New York Knicks with the San Antonio Spurs, according to ESPN. The Knicks won with a comeback to take a 3-1 lead in the series. Calipari said he had never seen a comeback like it.
Swift was part of a celebrity-heavy crowd that night. She sat with actor Mariska Hargitay and musicians Este Haim and Alana Haim while cheering the Knicks. Este and Alana wore shirts reading “Knickole Kidman” and “Knickleback,” according to the NBA. Rihanna was also among the well-known faces seen after the win.
It was not Swift’s only Knicks appearance during the play-offs. She also attended the team’s away game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in May with then-fiancé Travis Kelce.
