Netflix has handed The Apology a two-season straight-to-series order, with Gwyneth Paltrow set to star as Evelyn. The commission, meaning two seasons were ordered without a pilot being filmed first, was reported as an exclusive by Deadline.

The series is described as a thriller drama from A24 and Cut To, who are attached as the production companies behind the show. Netflix secured the project preemptively after it was taken out as a competitive project, meaning the streamer moved early to buy it before rival bidders could compete.

The story centres on Evelyn and Caleb Amspoker, a couple whose son was murdered 18 years ago. That event forms the starting point for the drama, which follows the couple in the aftermath of that loss.

Paltrow will play Evelyn. The part is her first series regular role, meaning her first ongoing lead part in a television series. A series regular appears across the season as part of the main cast, billed episode after episode rather than for a one-off appearance.

That is a first for Paltrow. Thomas Vinterberg will direct the series, and the job will be his U.S. television directing debut, meaning his first time directing television in the United States. A director leads the visual telling of the story on set, working with the cast and crew to shape each episode.

Murtagh wrote the series and serves as its showrunner. The showrunner is the writer in charge of the series day to day, guiding scripts and creative choices across the production.

Ordering two seasons at once gives that team a longer runway. Writers can map story across more episodes from the start, and crew get a longer period of work than a single-season pickup allows. What makes this stand out is the scale of the commitment.

For viewers, this means certainty. Both seasons are already backed, so there is no wait for a renewal decision after the first run to know more is coming. Netflix will carry the show as its streaming home, although a release date, further casting beyond Paltrow and production timing have not been disclosed in the report.
