Hulu's new mystery Phony arrives on 20 October with Connie Britton and Sam Nivola as a mother and son with something off between them.

The first season runs for eight episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is made as a half-hour series, meaning each episode runs around 30 minutes with adverts excluded.

The hook is simple. Sonny Cooke is a high school student who wakes after a car accident to find his mother Ellen looks slightly different, Hulu says. Hulu bills the show as a "coming-of-age mystery", a teenage growing-up story built around a puzzle.

Nivola plays Sonny. Britton plays Ellen, Sonny's mother. The wider cast lists Myra Syal, Grace Brennan, Mahaela Park, Maliq Johnson and Colter Lee.

Behind the camera, the series was created by Nick Paley. Paley runs the show jointly with Anthony King as co-showrunner, meaning joint boss of the writing and production. Paley was one of the writers of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

Britton and Nivola introduced the series at a premiere event in Los Angeles ahead of launch, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For viewers, this means one complete story in eight short parts. All the episodes land on Hulu in the United States on launch day.
