Subnautica 2 Update Adds 'Scariest' Region as Early Access 2.0 Begins

Unknown Worlds has started what it calls its "voyage to Early Access 2.0" for Subnautica 2, and the first major update adds a region the studio describes as the scariest it has ever made.
The news came in a video on the Subnautica YouTube channel, in which creative director Anthony Gallegos walked through the changes. Eurogamer reported the update on 21 October 2026.
The new region holds several biomes, which are distinct types of environment, along with story additions and new behaviours for the Leviathans, the game's large sea creatures. The update also adds a Frog chassis for the tadpole submersible. A chassis is the frame or body a vehicle is built on, and this one turns the small submersible into a pilotable mech.
Players also get a practical change. Wearing fins now lets them dash underwater. Until now, that move needed a biomod, an upgrade module that had to be fitted. Rock Paper Shotgun also highlighted the dash change alongside the Frog mechs.
Base building gets new options too, including a round room. Unknown Worlds says more detail will come in the coming months through deep dive videos, which are longer looks at specific features.
No release date for Early Access 2.0 has been announced. The studio first moved Early Access for Subnautica 2 into 2026 in a July 2025 post, explaining the decision in its update at the time. A post on the studio's site dated 15 October 2026 introduced the voyage and a new Dev Vlog series, a regular video diary from the team.
Early Access, for anyone new to the term, is a way for players to buy a game while it is still in development. The studio releases updates over time and collects feedback before a full launch. Subnautica 2 has been in that stage since its first Early Access release, and this update is the next step in that process.
The game itself is an alien ocean survival adventure. Players craft equipment, pilot submarines and explore coral reefs, volcanoes and deep cave systems. The new region adds to that map, and the studio has not yet said when players will be able to try it.
