Subnautica 2 hits 5 million sales in 22 days as Krafton plots a franchise future

Subnautica 2 sold more than 5 million copies in its first 22 days of early access, publisher Krafton disclosed in its Q2 2026 earnings report on 29 July. The underwater survival sequel reached the milestone faster than most full-priced games manage in a year.

Krafton also used the earnings report to lay out bigger plans for the property. The company stated it "plans to maintain stable service through full launch and develop Subnautica into a franchise IP," signalling that the series — so far comprising the original Subnautica, its standalone expansion Below Zero, and now Subnautica 2 — is being positioned for long-term expansion beyond a single sequel (Eurogamer).

The numbers back the ambition. The three Subnautica titles combined generated approximately 232.5 billion KRW (about £121 million) in revenue across the first half of Krafton's 2026 financial year. That contributed to record half-year earnings for the publisher overall, as reported by both the Korea Herald and Chosun Biz on 29 July (Korea Herald; Chosun Biz).

Subnautica 2 launched in early access — a release model where a game goes on sale while still in active development, with updates and new content added over time — on Xbox Series X/S and PC on 14 May 2026. Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment has not yet announced a date for the full, finished release.

Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds in 2021, bringing the California-based studio behind the beloved deep-sea survival games under the umbrella of the South Korean publisher best known for PUBG. The acquisition raised questions at the time about whether a big-budget publisher would change what made the series special; five years on, the studio is delivering commercial results on a scale the original Subnautica never reached.

The franchise push fits a broader Krafton strategy. In a January 2026 press release, the company outlined a pipeline of 26 curated new titles aimed at securing franchise IPs, explicitly naming Subnautica 2 alongside Palworld Mobile and NO LAW (Krafton). Subnautica is the first of those named titles to post a concrete sales milestone.

For players, the franchise-IP language likely means more Subnautica in various forms down the line — sequels, spin-offs, or adaptations. For now, the focus remains on guiding Subnautica 2 through its early access period to a full launch, with a player base already larger than many completed games ever achieve.
