The documentary Rather is now streaming for free on YouTube. The 2023 film, directed by Frank Marshall, follows veteran journalist Dan Rather and looks at the state of journalism today. Variety reported the free release on 26 October 2026.

The producers Wavelength, Fremantle's Original Productions and Anchor Entertainment are distributing the film at no charge. The documentary revisits Rather's career of more than 60 years and some of the biggest moments in American reporting.

Rather spent 44 years at CBS News. He took over the CBS Evening News in 1981, after working as a correspondent for 60 Minutes, the network's long-running current affairs programme. He left CBS News in 2006.

In an interview with Variety, Rather said he hopes free distribution will reach a wider audience. He also said he hopes the film will underline the defence of the First Amendment, the part of the US Constitution that protects free speech and a free press.

Rather now writes a newsletter called Steady on Substack, a platform where writers send their work directly to subscribers. In an extended interview with Mo Rocca, published by CBS News, he talked about what CBS Radio News meant to him.

The film's release comes as Bari Weiss has become editor-in-chief of CBS News. The editor-in-chief sets the editorial direction for the news division. Anyone who wants to watch Rather can find it on YouTube at no cost.
