Sosie Bacon Joins Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in MGM+ Horror Series The Black Tapes

MGM+ has given the green light to The Black Tapes, a supernatural horror series, and its lead cast is taking shape. Sosie Bacon is set to star opposite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, according to Variety. The streamer greenlit the show on October 26, 2026. A greenlight is the formal go-ahead to make a series.
The show is based on a horror podcast of the same name that launched in 2015. Its creators, Terry Miles and Paul Bae, will write and executive produce the series. John Rogers is the showrunner, meaning the lead writer who runs the show day to day. Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures, along with John Rogers and Jennifer Court of Kung Fu Monkey Productions, will also serve as executive producers, according to Deadline.
In the story, Coster-Waldau plays Dr. Richard Strand, a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past. Bacon plays Alex Regan, a methodical physicist who joins the investigation as a debunker. A debunker is someone who sets out to prove that supernatural events have ordinary explanations. Together, the two look into hauntings, possessions, disappearances and sinister legends known as the black tapes. Their search, Deadline reports, uncovers a hidden occult world and a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy.
The first season will run eight episodes. Filming is scheduled to begin in January in Vancouver, Canada, with the production start listed as January 2027. MGM+ will release the series in the U.S., the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latin America. No premiere date has been announced.
Coster-Waldau was announced as a cast member before this week's news. He is an Emmy nominee, and his role as Strand was reported alongside the greenlight. Bacon is adding the project to a busy year. She has just finished filming Season 2 of Prime Video's Scarpetta, where she reprises her role as Abby Turnbull opposite Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Bacon also stars in Family Movie, a horror-comedy in which she appears alongside her parents, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. The two directed the film, which premiered at SXSW. Variance Films has it slated for release on April 23, 2027.
For viewers, the news is a long way from the screen. Cameras will not roll until January, and the eight episodes will not reach MGM+ subscribers until a later date. For now, the immediate changes are the cast, the crew and the start of production.
