Alfred Molina and Selton Mello Join Paramount+ Thriller Ascent

Alfred Molina and Selton Mello have joined the cast of Ascent, a thriller series for Paramount+, according to Deadline. Adding actors to a show's cast is one of the ways a series takes shape before filming starts.
Molina will play Sebastian, the head of Ascent Ventures, the company at the centre of the story. Mello plays Leonardo, a business titan with a history with the firm. They join a cast that already includes Viola Davis, who stars as Catriona, an elite corporate fixer.
Sam Heughan plays Conal, a top agent at Ascent Ventures. Amy Madigan plays Rachel, a former executive at the company and a mentor to Catriona. Together, the characters suggest a story built around a powerful business world and the people who work inside it.
Paramount+ has given the series the go-ahead, a step that trade publications reported in August. Variety and Skydance both announced that order on 4 August 2026, when Davis's involvement was first made public. Paramount describes Ascent as a character-driven thriller, meaning the plot is driven mainly by the people in it.
John Logan created the series. He is also showrunner, the writer who runs the day-to-day creative work of a show, and an executive producer. Logan is a three-time Academy Award nominee. Davis, who is also an executive producer, is an EGOT winner, meaning she has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Michael Aguilar and Julius Tennon also serve as executive producers. Davis and Tennon are producing through JuVee Productions.
Production is set to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. Until then, the cast and crew will be working on scripts and preparations, and no air date has been announced so far.
For the people behind the camera, this is the stage where a show begins to hire. Writers, designers, camera crews and set builders all need work once filming dates are fixed. A series that reaches production gives those jobs a start date, which is what turns a green light into paid work.
Paramount+ is the streaming service run by Paramount, the media company, and it has not yet said where or when Ascent will appear on its schedule.
