Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey to 20 May 2027. The game had been scheduled for release on 16 February 2027, according to Video Games Chronicle, which reported the new date on 4 November 2026.

The move is the latest change to the release plan for the game, and the new date is now the one to plan around. Anyone who had marked February on a calendar will need to move that mark to late spring.

The game is built around a different lead character. Most players know the series through Kratos, the warrior at the centre of the earlier games. In God of War Laufey, players take on the role of Faye, also called Laufey the Just. She is Kratos's Norse wife and the mother of Atreus. It is the first mainline God of War game to star a protagonist other than Kratos. "Mainline" means one of the main entries in the series, rather than a side project or spin-off.

A release date is one of the first things a studio sets and one of the last things it changes. Moving it gives the team more time to finish the work before the game reaches players. For a game of this size, that means thousands of decisions on design, art, sound and testing, all made against a new deadline.

For players, the practical news is simple. The game is now due on 20 May 2027, not 16 February 2027.
