Bigg Boss Season 20 Passes 1 Billion Watch Hours on JioHotstar

India's Bigg Boss Season 20 has reached 1 billion hours of watch-time on JioHotstar in under 60 days, according to Deadline. Watch-time is the total number of hours viewers have spent with a show on the platform.
The milestone came with 3.5 billion votes. Votes are how viewers pick which housemates stay in the house, and the season's total was up 71% on Season 19. The number of people voting rose 48%. Deadline describes the pace as the fastest in the show's two decades on Indian screens.
Bigg Boss is the Hindi-language version of Big Brother, the format in which strangers live together in a house under constant cameras. This is the twentieth year of the Indian show. Salman Khan hosts. Banijay Entertainment owns the Big Brother format, and Endemol Shine India, part of Banijay Asia, makes the Indian version.
Season 20 premiered in September. It is one of six Indian versions of the format made for different language markets, so viewers in other languages are watching different editions of the same show.
The show also travels. JioHotstar launched in the UK, Canada and Singapore around the start of September, and Bigg Boss Season 20 now ranks among the platform's top five titles in all three countries. In Canada, the Hindi edition is available seven days before its television broadcast. In the United Arab Emirates, it is the top-rated show on Starzplay, a separate streaming service.
Inside India, the heaviest viewing comes from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. Those cities cover a wide mix of languages and regions, which helps explain why the show works across so many markets.
For the people who make it, a figure like this is about more than a scoreboard. A season of this size keeps a large production crew busy, from the team that builds and runs the house to the editors who shape each episode into a story. Every extra week on the air means more work for all of them.
The numbers also show how the show has grown in its own market. Votes rising faster than the number of voters suggests people who were already voting are voting more often. Watch-time, votes and voters are three separate measures, and each one tells a different part of the story.
JioHotstar is the streaming platform run by JioStar, the parent company that also holds the Bigg Boss broadcast business in India.
