Kratos is not going anywhere. Cory Barlog, head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that the next mainline God of War game starring Kratos will pick up directly after the events of God of War Laufey, the upcoming standalone entry centred on Kratos's wife, Faye (Eurogamer).

Speaking on a panel titled "God of War Laufey – Forging God of War's Next Heroes" on Friday, 24 July 2026, Barlog told attendees that everything the studio is building into the Faye game will set up and expand whatever comes next. He also stated plainly that there will always be Kratos games throughout the franchise's history (Eurogamer).

For anyone catching up: God of War Laufey is a new entry in the long-running PlayStation action series, revealed during Sony's State of Play broadcast on 2 June 2026. Rather than following Kratos, it centres on Faye — his wife, already dead by the time the most recent God of War games begin — who somehow begins a new adventure despite her fate. Ariel Lawrence serves as game director. Barlog discussed the concept as far back as 2018, the same year God of War rebooted the series on PlayStation 4 (Eurogamer; PlayStation Blog).

Laufey was announced alongside other PlayStation heavyweights at that June showcase, including Until Dawn 2, a new Marvel's Wolverine gameplay reveal, and a Tomb Raider release date (PlayStation Blog). The studio has hinted at a 2027 release window for Laufey (Eurogamer).

What makes Barlog's Comic-Con remarks notable is the connective tissue he is drawing between projects. Rather than treating Laufey as a side story, he framed it as foundational — the work done in Faye's game feeds directly into the next Kratos-led adventure. For a series that has sold over 50 million copies worldwide across its history, that is a clear signal that Santa Monica Studio sees its next two releases as a linked arc, not separate detours.

No release date, title, or platform has been given for the next Kratos game. Barlog's comments confirm it exists and that it follows Laufey. That is the story for now — and for a fan base that waited five years between 2018's God of War and 2022's God of War Ragnarök, knowing the pipeline is flowing is reassurance enough.
