Tom Holland Brought Spider-Man Game Moves Into Brand New Day — and the Game Returned the Favour

Tom Holland could not sleep the night before his new film's premiere, so he did what a lot of people do when restless: he played a Spider-Man video game. The game, Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man for PlayStation, is not just a hobby for the actor. It helped shape the film itself.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day held its premiere on Monday, 27 July 2026, ahead of a theatrical release on Friday, 31 July 2026. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland, the film draws its action sequences and finishing moves directly from Sony's Spider-Man games, Holland told IGN's Jeffrey Vega on the red carpet (IGN, 28 July 2026).

The cross-pollination went both ways. Cretton said stunt performers and action designers brought screenshots of moves from the games into the writers' room to show him what they wanted to replicate on screen. Holland and his wife, Zendaya, are both fans of Insomniac's Spider-Man titles, as he told IGN Benelux in June.

The exchange does not end with the film borrowing from the game. Insomniac added two new suits to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in celebration of the movie's release. One is the "Fresh Start" suit, matching the costume Holland wears in Brand New Day. The second is the "Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls" suit, tied to the recently revealed fighting game of the same name. Insomniac announced the update on the PlayStation website with the tagline: "It's a Brand New Day for Marvel's Spider-Man 2!"

Box office expectations for the film are large. Deadline projected a domestic opening weekend of US$180 million to US$190 million, while Box Office Pro offered a higher range of US$230 million to US$250 million. Forbes reported the same $180–190 million domestic tracking on 27 July (Forbes, 27 July 2026). IGN called it the biggest projected opening of 2026 (IGN, 27 July 2026). Internationally, Variety reported projections of US$275 million to US$300 million (Variety, 28 July 2026).

For a general sense of critical reception, IGN's Tom Jorgensen gave the film a 7 out of 10.

Marvel began building toward the release months ago. The studio published an official full trailer on Marvel.com on 18 March 2026, followed by opening ticket sales on 17 June. The new Spider-Man suit was first teased back in August 2025.

What makes the story unusual is the loop it describes. A film series that inspired a blockbuster game series has now drawn its on-screen choreography from that same game, and the game, in turn, has dressed its character in the movie's suit. The line between adaptation and source has, at least for this franchise, effectively closed.
