Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition Announced at Gen Con 2026, Open Alpha Playtest Live Now

White Wolf has announced Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition at Gen Con 2026, and players can already get their hands on it. A free alpha playtest went live on Demiplane, the digital tabletop platform, on 30 July 2026, according to Variety.

The announcement came from Jess Lanzillo, World of Darkness creative director at White Wolf and a former executive at Wizards of the Coast — the publisher behind Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. V6, as the new edition is already being called, is the first project to be developed and published entirely in-house since White Wolf relaunched in 2025. The previous 5th edition shipped in 2018, making this a substantial gap between core rules for a game that has run since 1991.

The headline changes are mechanical. V6 merges Vitae, Willpower and Health into a single resource pool — a simplification of the separate trackers players have managed for decades. Difficulty now subtracts dice from the pool rather than raising a target number, a shift designed to keep every roll readable at a glance. Nearly all dice are rolled by players at the table, rather than split between players and the Storyteller (the game's term for the gamemaster who runs the session). A new Beast/Nature Tracker reimagines the tension at the heart of the game: vampires fighting the monster inside them.

For anyone new to the property, Vampire: The Masquerade is a tabletop role-playing game set in the World of Darkness, a modern-gothic universe where vampires hide among humans, bound by secret traditions and their own hunger. Players take the roles of these vampires; the Storyteller shapes the world around them. The 5th edition's 2018 release brought the game back to wide attention after years of licensing changes and fragmented publishing.

Lanzillo's mandate, as reported by Variety, is to retain the identity of the original game while modernising dice mechanics, character creation and Storyteller tools. The World of Darkness official news page confirmed the playtest launch with a featured post headlined "Playtest The New Alpha of Vampire: The Masquerade Now on Demiplane!" on 30 July 2026.

The broader World of Darkness slate is active. The same news page carried a post in March 2026 about a Hunter: The Reckoning trailer titled "Deathwish," signalling that White Wolf is building momentum across multiple game lines in the shared setting.

An alpha playtest is the earliest public stage of development — the rules are unfinished and will change based on feedback. Players who join now are testing a working draft, not a final product. That open invitation is the news: rather than announcing V6 and waiting, White Wolf is putting the dice in players' hands immediately.
