Dawn Richard will release her first solo album in five years, 'Creole Culture,' on October 9 via Merge Records, completing a trilogy that has traced her family's Louisiana roots across three records. The announcement came with a new single, 'Enough,' and a full tracklist featuring Big Freedia, Durand Bernarr and others (Pitchfork).

Richard described 'Enough' as being about 'unlearning the lie that your value has to be earned.' In the same statement, she added: 'Sometimes the greatest act of resistance is believing you were always worthy.' The single follows June's 'Baby, Can We?,' a collaboration with Durand Bernarr that also appears on the album (Pitchfork).

The trilogy began with 2019's 'New Breed,' which Richard has said was the story of New Orleans through her father's eyes. Its follow-up, 2021's 'Second Line: An Electro Revival,' told the story through her mother. 'Creole Culture' now closes the arc (Pitchfork).

'Second Line' landed at No. 21 in Pitchfork's 50 Best Albums of 2021 — a list placement, not a sales figure, but one that signalled the record's critical reception (Pitchfork).

Since 'Second Line,' Richard has not been idle. She released two collaborative albums with neoclassical composer Spencer Zahn — 'Pigments' in 2022 and 'Quiet in a World Full of Noise' in 2024 — and teamed with Toronto saxophonist Joseph Shabason on the 2024 Sade tribute 'Broken Hearted Sade' (Pitchfork). She also announced her first animated series, funded through Kickstarter, in September 2025 (Instagram).

The 'Creole Culture' tracklist runs to eleven songs, with guest appearances spaced across the record. Big Freedia — the New Orleans bounce artist who has spent two decades pushing the genre beyond its hometown — guests on the opening track, 'A Creole Culture Intro.' Anjelika 'Jelly' Joseph appears on 'Chuuuuurch,' Frank Richard of Chocolate Milk on 'Groove City,' and Tarriona 'Tank' Ball on 'L V R.' Durand Bernarr returns on 'Baby, Can We?' The remaining tracks — 'Enough,' 'Only Fans,' 'Pilates,' 'Motives,' 'Fiesta' and 'Faith in the Fire' — are credited to Richard alone (Pitchfork).

Richard's Merge Records biography frames her approach as treating Louisiana Creole culture, New Orleans bounce and what she calls 'Southern Swag' as elemental, weaving through house, footwork and R&B (Merge Records).
