Nintendo Declines to Share Star Fox Sales Numbers in Q1 FY2027 Results

Nintendo released its first-quarter financial results for FY2027 on 6 August 2026, covering the three months from April through June, and the breakout question was simple: how did Star Fox do?

The answer, from Nintendo, was that the game had "performed steadily." That was it. No unit count, no revenue figure, no ranking among the company's other titles. (GameSpot)

Star Fox, a remake of the 1997 Nintendo 64 title Star Fox 64, launched exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2026. A free demo let players try the game before buying. But the quarter closed on 30 June, meaning the results captured only six days of Star Fox sales — a narrow window that partly explains why Nintendo had little to report.

The picture from the data is starker than the language suggests. Star Fox did not appear on Nintendo's million-seller list — the separate financial breakdown the company publishes showing every title that crossed one million copies sold in the period. Its absence means the game sold fewer than one million units in those six days (GameSpot; Nintendo IR data).

The silence around Star Fox's numbers lands at an unusual moment for the franchise. Fox McCloud, the series' fox-pilot protagonist, appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — the first film of 2026 to surpass US$1 billion at the worldwide box office (GameSpot). The film gave the character a visibility boost that no game alone could have delivered. Whether that screen exposure translates into game sales is a question the quarter's data cannot yet answer.

The broader hardware picture also moved in the wrong direction. Nintendo Switch 2 hardware sales fell 34.4% year-on-year to 3.82 million units for the quarter (Nintendo IR data). The original Nintendo Switch, still on shelves, saw its own hardware sales decline 31.8% year-on-year over the same period.

Cumulative figures, however, continue to climb. The Switch 2 has now reached 23.68 million units sold since launch (Nintendo Everything). The original Switch sits at 156.59 million lifetime units — a figure that keeps it in contention for the best-selling console of all time.

For Star Fox, the real test comes next quarter. Three months of full sales data will give a clearer read on whether the remake found its audience — and whether Nintendo decides those numbers are worth sharing.
